Coconuts scientifically known as cocos nucifera is believed to be native to the coastal regions of Tropical Asia and the Pacific. Our coconuts are locally harvested from trees here in South Florida. In south Florida we come across many varieties of coconuts that vary in shape, color, and size.
Coconuts are considered to fall into the category of Drupes as they are a combination of a fruit, a nut and a seed. Coconuts have a tough outer layer known as the husk. Once cracked open there is a thin or thick layer of white or translucent meat depending on the age of the coconut which is highly nutritious. Coconuts are different from other fruits as their endosperm contains a large quantity of water known as coconut water or juice.
